Industry

As the oldest program of its kind in the Province of British Columbia and ranked among the world’s top civil engineering schools, UBC Civil Engineering enjoys strong ties with industry across the province, Canada and the world.

Our faculty and graduate students frequently partner with companies to tackle the biggest challenges in industry and society. From 2010 to 2020, industry partnerships made up 33% of our total funding.

This page outlines many opportunities for industry professionals to connect and engage with our students, faculty, and staff.

Hire a UBC Civil Engineering Student or Grad

UBC Civil Engineering attracts and develops some of the most talented and innovate students from around the world. Connect with and recruit students and graduates, whether for co-op, internship, or full-time roles.

Guest Lecturing Opportunities

Members from industry are often invited to give guest lectures in undergraduate and graduate courses to provide the practitioner’s perspective on the application of fundamental engineering concepts. If you are interested in giving a guest lecture in your field of expertise, please contact us, and we would be pleased to connect you with a faculty member in your area.

Public Seminars and Events

The Department hosts many public seminars and events over the course of the year. This includes the Faculty Seminar Series, in which faculty members give an overview of their research projects in an informal setting to members of the UBC community and the public. Alumni are encouraged to attend public events listed on the Civil Engineering Events calendar.

CIVL 445/446 Capstone Design Project

In the final year of the program, all Civil Engineering undergraduate students are required to complete a significant design project over an eight-month period. This project involves collaborating with industry and community groups on real-world problems and scenarios under the guidance of three faculty members. In addition, industry practitioners are invited to judge the final projects at the end of each term.

Collaborate with Faculty Research

The internationally recognized research produced by the Department would not be possible without the support of industry. Members of industry and prominent alumni are welcome to propose research initiatives and opportunities for collaboration. Please visit our Research page for more information on the Department’s current research activities and profiles of our faculty members. For more information, please feel free to contact us.
